The FireFit Training Guide is based on an eight to 12-week program, depending on each individual’s fitness level, and is available to help eligible candidates prepare for the Fire and Rescue NSW Physical Aptitude Test (PAT)*.
Do firefighters have basic training?
Developing safe and competent firefighters Specific training may vary between individual Fire Services. You will undergo a period of basic training managed by your Service Learning Development team.
How much weight can a firefighter carry?
When all is said and done, a firefighter will need to be able to lift, conservatively 200 lbs at a time in various forms. Some of the weight will be personal protective gear (turnouts, boots, helmet, SCBA) with the addition of either hose, various tools, a person being rescued, or a ladder.
How fit should a firefighter be?
Firefighters need strong aerobic capacity for the rigors of the everyday job, which can include running up stairs, climbing ladders and more. This is all while carrying up to 75 pounds of PPE, depending on the job. Departments can test for aerobic capacity in a variety of ways.
Can you fail firefighter training?
If you fail to achieve any element of the initial training, you will be provided with appropriate support and guidance in order to successfully achieve those elements. Ultimately, repeated failure to achieve those elements could result in the termination of your contract of employment.
